Track prep, for the bottom part anyway, was very good. The first motos, you would ride this section on fluffy loam, with at least 5-6 possible lines through the corners here. Second motos this was choppy and you had to plan your lines around square edged bumps, ruts and an occasional exposed rock, but that is the nature of Desert MX.
Bill Silverthorne did a nice job laying out a very "Open" feeling track to race. Featuring, wide turns, a sandwash, step jumps, a big European style blind jump(seen on the cover and to the left) this track was different than any I have raced this year. I will be back to Glen Helen August 22, for the AHRMA PV Regional and I am anxious to see how differently the 2 clubs layout tracks at the same venue.
With so much room on the track, scenes like this were common. Attendance was good and dicing was abundant. The L.A. crowd came and they wanted Brass for their short ride home. Joe Gonzalez (in green) came down from Nor/Cal to give the So/Cal boys a riding lesson in the first moto of GP II 500 Expert. Joe is fun to watch, very smooth and fast, with (come from behind, don't give up) determination.
After making the drive all the way up to Washougal this year to race the Dirk Williams/Hammer&Tongs/USVMX National, in June, where "Horsepower Hill" was cut from the course at the last minute because of muddy conditions. I was really in the mood for some big elevation change at this race. Bill Silverthorne had layed the track out to include this big horseshoe shaped section with steep, up and down hills. There was some controversy as to whether the lower skilled riders and smaller displacement bikes would be up for the challenge. In fact at the end of riders meeting Bill's friend and Co-winner of the Baja 500, Gene Fetty rode his 125 Husqvarna to the top to demonstrate a small bore could make it, to the cheers of everyone present. During practice we rode the hill and it was exhilarating. In the end Dave took a consensus amongst the racer and it was decided that with the dust, steepness and possible rutting later in the program the section should be cut from the course. So we did not use this part except for practice.
