Look how smooth and fast this track looks. I'm tapped out in 4th. This is my last moto of the day. I know because you can see the helmetcam on my helmet. I raced six motos. How did the track hold up so well? Injuries. Yeah, every time the ambulance ran out to pick someone up it seemed like the tractor would smooth out the track even more.
Coming up to the start gate I knuckle bump a couple of what I would call my racing buddies, both National Champions and excellent riders. By the end of the day one would have a broken femur, the other a broken ancle. My first moto I see the first fall, it's bad, it takes a long time to gather up the injured rider. The tractors use this time to smooth and groom the track.
We finally race my first moto, I go back to the truck to switch bikes. While there the track gets quiet, this is the Spooky Quiet that was to reoccur throughout the whole day with as many as 10 medically treated injuries. 2 of which were life threatening. So it went all day , you would hear racing, then it would get quiet, the tractors would start up for a while then it would get quiet again. Then the racing would start again.
During the quiet times, I would get this sad feeling and I would hope that the injury wasn't too bad. It was that spooky. This is how it felt to me but I'm just one guy, I'm sure others that came might not have noticed these things as much as I did, and had a fun time. As for me I was spooked. I told the guys on my team just stay alert, don't push in a squeeze, and check your bikes between motos. I kept thinking "Are we too slow or is this track too fast?" I survived the day and so did the guys on my team. We wish everyone a speedy recovery.

Hollister for me was scarry, spooky, weird, this year. I went to race 3 classes, have fun and enjoy the primo setting that is Hollister Hills. The Mike Lightfoot Memorial Event has always been one of my favorites. I've raced 3 times here and until this year it felt comfortable to be here.
